Nitrous Oxide Sedation for Anxious Patients
Dental anxiety is common and nothing to apologise for. Nitrous oxide — laughing gas — is a mild inhaled sedative that takes the edge off within minutes, leaving you awake, aware and able to talk to us, but far more relaxed.
It is the same option we use for children who find treatment overwhelming, and it is available for most procedures at our Jane Street office.
How it works
You breathe a blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small, soft nose piece. The effect is a light, floating calm and reduced sensitivity to time and discomfort. We adjust the level throughout the appointment, and when we switch it off you return to normal within a few minutes.
- Takes effect in two to three minutes
- Adjustable, so we can keep you comfortable throughout
- Wears off almost immediately after treatment
- You can usually drive yourself home
- Safe for children as well as adults
Other ways we keep visits calm
Sedation is only part of it. We explain each step before it happens, agree on a stop signal, book longer appointments so nothing is rushed, and are happy to start with something small — even just a look and a chat — to rebuild your confidence.
Who should avoid it
Nitrous oxide is not suitable if you have a blocked nose, certain respiratory conditions, a B12 deficiency, or are in the first trimester of pregnancy. We review your medical history before recommending it.
Frequently asked questions
Will I be unconscious?
No. Nitrous oxide is conscious sedation — you stay awake and can respond to us the whole time.
Can I drive after nitrous oxide?
In almost all cases yes, once we have given you a few minutes of pure oxygen and confirmed you feel normal.
Is laughing gas safe for kids?
Yes, it is one of the most widely used and best-studied options in children's dentistry when administered and monitored properly.
